Soon, people who want to visit the UK will have to fill out an online form and pay a fee. By the end of 2023, the UK’s electronic travel authorization system will be fully in place.
When the electronic travel authorization visa waiver goes into effect later this year, people who want to visit the United Kingdom will have to apply ahead of time and pay a fee.
The UK’s ETA system will be fully in place by the end of 2023. According to the government’s ETA website, all non-visa foreign visitors, including those from the United States, will have to apply online before coming.
The ETA is being used as part of the UK’s plan to digitise all of its borders by 2025.
“The security of the UK border is our top priority,” said UK Home Secretary Priti Patel in a statement. “By introducing ETAs, we can make sure that everyone who wants to travel to the UK has permission to do so in advance and turn away those who pose a threat.”
To apply, travellers will need to give information about themselves, their passports, and their safety. After that, applications will be processed automatically, and travellers can expect a response within 48 to 72 hours, on average.
The cost of the application wasn’t clear right away, but it was expected to be made public later.
The ETA will be introduced first in a number of Gulf countries, such as the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and others.
Europe plans to start using its new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) in November. This is when the ETA will be put into place. This permission comes with a €7 fee and is for foreign visitors between the ages of 18 and 70.
Before coming to the U.S., travellers from countries with a Visa Waiver Program must also apply for an authorization. This is done through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization, or ESTA. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the fee for ESTA went up from $14 to $21 last year.
