Odessa, Ukraine, has been added to the list of World Heritage Sites in Peril by UNESCO.
The city, which is on the southern coast of Ukraine, will now get more technical and financial help from the rest of the world.
The city of Odessa in Ukraine has been put on the UNESCO World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger.
UNESCO has said that the city, which is on the southern coast of Ukraine, is in danger and will now get more technical and financial help from the international community. Ukraine can ask for this help to protect property and even help fix up damaged property.
Odessa is now on the World Heritage List, along with several other places and cities in Ukraine.
In a statement, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said, “Odessa, a free city, a world city, a legendary port that has left its mark on film, literature, and the arts, is now under the stronger protection of the international community.” “While the war is still going on, this inscription shows that we are all determined to keep this city, which has always survived global changes, from being destroyed any more.”
The war, which broke out when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, sped up the process of putting the city’s historic centre on the list. In October 2022, the city was officially put forward for consideration by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
UNESCO added places from Yemen and Lebanon to its List of World Heritage in Danger, along with Odessa.
In Yemen, the Ancient Kingdom of Saba’s Marib was added to the list of important places. Seven archaeological sites on the property “bear witness to the rich Kingdom of Saba and its architectural, artistic, and technological achievements from the 1st millennium BCE until the arrival of Islam around 630 CE.”
Also added to the list was the Rachid Karameh International Fair in Tripoli, Lebanon. The building was designed by a Brazilian architect in 1962. It was put on the list “due to its alarming state of conservation, the lack of financial resources for its maintenance, and the latent risk of development proposals that could affect the integrity of the complex.”
