Allianz Partners USA, a travel insurance and support company, has found a new travel trend called the “pay-cation,” led by Americans aged 18 to 34.

The 15th Annual Vacation Confidence Index study by Allianz Partners found that three out of ten Americans will choose to work while on vacation in 2023. This new work-from-vacation travel trend called a “pay-cation,” grew out of available remote work policies during the COVID pandemic. Young working Americans love this trend, which goes far beyond “bleisure” travel.

The Allianz survey found that people between the ages of 18 and 34 are more likely to work remotely at a travel site than people between the ages of 35 and 54 or those 55 and older.

In 2023, young Americans are also the ones who are most likely to put themselves and their mental health first. Wellness and self-care are essential to 39% of all the people who took the poll and 54% of those between the ages of 18 and 34.

Daniel Durazo, head of external communications at Allianz Partners USA, said that younger Americans who started their careers during the work-from-home era during the pandemic are changing how we like to work and travel. “Some companies have already gone back to work in person, but our research shows that a healthy balance between work and play is here to stay. Putting self-care first will change how Americans think about travel and time off the clock.”

In 2023, younger Americans are more likely than older Americans to travel alone, and this is because they are more focused on their health and self-care. In a survey, 42 per cent of young Americans said they plan to travel alone this year, compared to 31 per cent of those aged 35 to 54 and 17 per cent of those aged 55 and higher.

Solo travel can still include a companion animal, which increases the value of emotional well-being. Forty-one per cent of people ages 18 to 34 will bring their pets on vacation, but only 36 per cent of people ages 34 to 54 and 20 per cent of people 55 and older will do the same.
