In a groundbreaking collaboration between Revolve, a prominent online retailer, and Maison Meta, an AI-centric creative agency, the first-ever AI Fashion Week took place this April. The unique concept promised to turn the top three collections submitted to a design competition during the event into physical products for sale. Now, that promise has been fulfilled, and the initial drop of AI-designed garments is here.
The first release includes 10 to 12 pieces from each of the winning collections, with prices ranging from a $1,598 pleated taffeta dress to a $228 one-shouldered top. What sets these pieces apart is that they are designed with the help of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and manufactured by Revolve. Some items maintain a traditional clothing design, such as a red miniskirt or a pistachio-coloured leather trenchcoat. However, others reflect the unconventional nature of AI’s creativity, with designs like a sequined navy blouse featuring hand-engulfing satin sleeves and a bolero-like shape.
The three winning collections were brought to life by designers with diverse backgrounds. First-place winner José Sabral, the creative mind behind the Paatiff brand, is an architect. Similarly, second-place winner Matilde Mariano, who founded Molnm, has an architectural background as well. The final winner, Opé Stylestar, hails from the United States and previously worked with fashion icon Betsey Johnson. Opé’s brand, Opé, embraces a futuristic and artistic aesthetic.
The collaborative project aims to empower the winners to establish and run their brands independently, giving them a unique opportunity to showcase their innovative designs to a global audience.
To create their collections, the winners harnessed AI image generators like Midjourney and Stable Diffusion, often fine-tuning the designs using Photoshop. To transform these digital designs into tangible garments, they worked alongside the Revolve team in Los Angeles, contributing to product development and sourcing materials. Revolve executed the entire manufacturing process.
Michael Mente, co-founder and co-chief executive of Revolve, emphasized the pivotal role of technology in the company’s competitive edge, stating, “Through AI, we’re able to explore new emerging designers, brands, and trends that we are known for delivering in unique ways.”
AI Fashion Week has proven that AI-powered tools can enable people with various backgrounds to produce groundbreaking designs. Nima Abbasi, a partner at Maison Meta, highlights the importance of creativity, vision, and the ability to learn these AI tools.
Revolve and Maison Meta are already gearing up for the next AI Fashion Week, which will be held in two parts. The first leg will coincide with the PhotoVogue Festival in Milan from November 16 to 19, while the second event will return to New York from November 30 to December 1. This time, five winners will be selected to have their collections transformed into physical garments, further bridging the gap between the worlds of art and technology.
