Some universities’ study abroad programmes can cost up to $15,000. Here’s how to get ready for it.
Every year, a lot of American college freshmen go all over the world to study. During the 2019-2020 school year, only 162,633 students did this, which is a 53% drop from the time before the COVID-19 pandemic, when that number was around 341,000 and slowly going up every year.
Travel can be expensive, though, and trips with your classmates to other countries during your semester abroad are no exception. Not only will you have to pay for tuition, but you will also have to pay for meals, housing, flights, activities, and everything else. Even with all the scholarships and grants out there, these costs can add up and make it hard for students and their families to pay for college.
Spending a lot of money to study abroad is possible. The University of Louisville says that the average cost for a student to study abroad for a semester is between $7,000 and $15,000. It’s important to talk to your family about this upcoming expense so you can figure out if this is something they could help you with.
You should also talk to your school’s study abroad coordinator about where you’d like to go, what you could study there, what programmes are available, and how much it will cost. That way, you can show your family a more accurate picture of how much it will cost.
Keep in mind that the cost can also depend on the type of programme you choose. A programme that lasts only one month is likely to be much cheaper than one that lasts the whole semester. There are also programmes that let you study on your own while living with a host family or in a group with other students from your university. The person in charge of study abroad at your school will be able to break it all down for you and help you choose the best option for your academic and financial goals.
Check to see if there are any grants or scholarships available.
Now would also be a good time to find out if there are any scholarships or grants that could cover some or all of the cost, and to do some research on which ones you can apply for. Scholarships and grants are different from student loans in that they don’t have to be paid back. To get them, you just have to fill out an application. These funding options can help a lot with the financial burden that comes with studying abroad, so you should definitely look into them.
If there aren’t any scholarships or grants available and your family can’t help pay for your trip, you might want to come up with a way to pay for your study abroad programme if you’re still really interested in it.
Find a job on or off campus and save as much money as you can.
You can make a good amount of money by working on campus, at a nearby store or restaurant, doing research, babysitting, tutoring, or any of a number of other jobs in your college town. There are many side jobs or part-time jobs that college students can do to make extra money. If you can’t commit to set work hours, apps like Wag! and TaskRabbit can help you find jobs with flexible hours, like walking dogs or putting together furniture.
Selling things you no longer need on apps like Depop or Mercari is another popular way to make money. Select talked to a 22-year-old Depop seller who makes between $1,500 and $2,500 per month. Most of the time, you only need a phone and a PayPal account to start selling.
