Has publicity led to an excessive amount of attention being paid to what was once a well-kept secret holiday spot?

To place the blame on social media and unfulfilled needs

The amount of individuals going to outdoor attractions such as national parks has seen a recent uptick.

Some travellers believe that there is an excessive amount of information available on social media on their preferred vacation destinations.

Because of the large number of people, one tourist has expressed frustration that they are experiencing “a degree of stress that we didn’t really experience before.”

She continues, “That was my go-to,” recalling how during the week she could paddle down the river for kilometres without encountering any other people. “That was my go-to,” she says.

She claims that the river has been clogged with motorised boats ever since the summer of 2020, when people began going to parks in order to keep themselves active and maintain a safe distance from one another in the midst of the pandemic. During her previous kayaking trips, she frequently spotted fish, turtles, and manatees. However, during her most recent trip, which took place in the fall of 2021, she did not see any of these animals. What was once a relaxing paddle trip has been ruined by the smell of gasoline that is burning. She believes that the park’s increased popularity can be attributed to posts on social media that highlight the park’s pristine waterways.

However, she believes that the majority of travel bloggers and YouTubers do not present their recommendations in a way that takes into account the need to conserve natural resources. Her goal is to encourage underprivileged groups to go hiking and camping. Although she and the other travelling bloggers are happy to see an increase in the number of people participating in outdoor activities such as kayaking, hiking, and RVing across the country, they are disappointed to see that locations that were once peaceful getaways are increasingly becoming popular with tourists.

She issues a stern warning that this could have extremely negative repercussions. If you tell just one person, you’ve basically told the whole world. There is always the possibility that somebody will hear about a location that you recommend, and it will all of a sudden become very well-known.

There were over two million posts on Instagram that contained the hashtags “hiddengems” or “hiddengem” in connection with them.

Although the number of posts is comparable to that of other popular hashtags such as #amazonfinds (1.7 million) and #traveltips (1.7 million), it is a relatively small percentage of the 634 million photos and videos that have the generic #travel hashtag attached to them (3.1 million posts). On TikTok, both of those searches have clocked in excess of the 6 billion view milestone. The #travel hashtag has been viewed approximately 86 billion times on the app, while the #traveltok hashtag has been viewed only 2.3 billion times.

According to the research conducted by Kelli Burns, an associate professor in the school of advertising and public communications at the University of South Florida who focuses on the topic of social media influencers, it has been discovered that the internet can be a significant factor in the vacation plans that individuals make. People have been itching to get away for quite some time, and as a result, they are using social media to do some research on potential vacation destinations.

The most popular destinations for tourists across the United States are seeing an increase in the number of people travelling from other countries. Travelers report that once-remote tourist destinations are seeing an increase in the number of visitors in recent years.
