After two years of lockdowns and trying to figure out COVID’s rules and restrictions, travelling came back in a big way last year. It’s here to stay this year. Every study points to something we already know: we’re ready to see and do everything the world has to offer. But if you’ve been wondering if the way we travel has changed and what people around the world are doing this year, here’s a quick look at the travel trends that are going to be big.
For the soul, travel
Many of us have had hard times in the past few years. So, it makes sense that one reason people want to travel is to improve themselves in mind, body, and spirit. Booking.com did some research and found that 42% of travellers want to take a vacation to focus on their physical and mental health. Expedia’s report on travel trends for 2023 says that people looking for wellness breaks like to go to Iceland, Norway, Sri Lanka, Turkey, and Switzerland.
Travel shows on TV find their audience
If you’ve been thinking about going to Paris while watching “Emily in Paris,” you’re not the only one. Expedia’s 2023 travel trends report says, “Two-thirds of global travellers have thought about and 39% have booked trips to destinations after seeing them on streamed shows or movies.” The report also says that this trend has helped places like Paris, New York, Great Britain, and New Zealand.
Off-the-beaten-path places are the new hip.
People used to be called “well-traveled” if they had been to popular places like London or Rome. In 2023, everyone wants to find out about things that are less well-known or even unknown. According to a report from Booking.com, 73% of travellers want to leave their comfort zone, and 30% want to find hidden gems. Booking.com says that 71% of Indian travellers want to experience a “complete culture shock.” But this isn’t just a problem in those places. Travelers also want to add new and unique experiences to their travel stories, like trying new foods or going to places where UFOs have been spotted.
Traveling on a tight budget gets a boost.
Even though people want to travel more and try new things, they don’t want to spend all of their savings or leave a huge hole in their pockets to do it. Booking.com’s report also says, “In 2023, travellers will be more careful about how much they spend on their trips, with 68% paying close attention to how much they spend.” The report also says that 53% of travellers are willing to save money by taking longer routes or travelling during the off-season. But when travellers want to spend money, they do so on unique dining experiences, unique places to stay, and unique things that they can’t get back home.
Sustainability is important to travellers.
It’s been a while since climate change was a major problem around the world. We also choose where to go on vacation based on how our actions affect the environment. According to a report by Kayak, 43% of Indians say that sustainability is the most important factor when choosing where to spend their summer vacation. The Virtuoso survey also found that 70% of travellers think that travelling in a sustainable way makes their trip better.
