After a pretty crazy summer travel season, it’s time to get serious about planning your end-of-year trips, which are likely to be both busy and expensive.

The travel booking app Hopper just released its 2022 Holiday Travel Outlook report, which says that this year’s holiday airfare prices will be the highest in five years. Still, more than half of Americans are planning trips for one or both of the November and December holidays. Of those, 70% are going to see family and friends.

High fuel prices, fewer flights, and people wanting to travel more because they may have missed two years of holidays are all things that are making airfare more expensive this year. At least 30% of holiday travellers are planning to fly, but two-thirds of them say that price is the most important factor when they plan their trips.

Based on its research, Hopper put together some tips on how to find the best deals on flights for the holidays this year:

Defoes LifeStyle

Book by the middle of October. Hopper recommends that travellers book their flights for both Thanksgiving and Christmas no later than the week of October 10. If you see a good deal on a flight, you should take it, because prices are likely to go up and the few flights that are available may sell out quickly this year.

Start making plans now. Hopper said it’s best to get a head start and make sure to book by the middle of October. In the past, Hopper users who started planning their holiday trips early with the app saved up to 18% on domestic flights and 15% on international flights.

Use a tool that tracks prices. Over the next few weeks, prices, especially for Christmas travel, are expected to change in a less predictable way. Fare deals can come and go quickly, so Hopper suggests using a price-tracking tool (like Hopper) to find out as soon as prices drop.

Keep your plans for date night open. By flying at off-peak times, people can save up to $300 (i.e., before or after the actual holiday week). To get the best airfare prices for Thanksgiving travel, try to leave on Monday of Thanksgiving week and come back on any weekday after the holiday. Also, to find the best deals on flights for the Christmas weekend, try to leave on a Monday or Tuesday before the holiday and come back on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday of the week after Christmas.
