Since millions of people can now choose where they live and work, Airbnb guests are showing up in thousands of towns and cities this summer – over 72,000, to be exact. Some even “live” on Airbnb for the whole season. In 2021, about one in five Airbnb guests said they used the service to work remotely while travelling. This trend has continued into the first quarter of 2022.

Airbnb is sharing today some of the best places in the U.S. and Canada for long-term guests and Hosts, based on affordability, hospitality, popularity, and Host income. This is for people who want to plan their own long-term trips this summer, or for people who want to make money by hosting digital nomads.

Long-term stays bring in the most money.

The trend of being able to live and work from anywhere is a chance not only for digital nomads, but also for Hosts who have space to share with them. Even though the cost of living is going up in the US and Canada, hosting continues to help families make ends meet. In fact, 41% of Hosts in the US and 45% of Hosts in Canada say that one of the reasons they host is to make money to help with rising prices. In fact, between Q1 2021 and Q1 2022, Hosts in the US made more than $2 billion just from long-term stays, and Hosts in Canada made more than $280 million from long-term stays during the same time period.
Defoes LifeStyle

Based on the average earnings of Hosts in the first quarter of 2022, Airbnb has also found the best places in both countries for Hosts to make money by having long-term guests.
In America:

  • La Quinta, California
  • Delray Beach, Florida
  • Marco Island, Florida
  • Palm Springs, California
  • Indio, California

And in Canada:

  • Whistler, British Columbia
  • Vancouver, British Columbia
  • Mont-Tremblant, Québec
  • Toronto, Ontario
  • Kitchener, Ontario

Best Equipped

Since Hosts in the US and Canada already make money from long-term stay guests, Airbnb has put together a list of cities and towns with at least 1,000 active listings as of Q1 2022 that have the most long-term stay-ready listings.
In America:

  • Irvine, California
  • Los Angeles, California
  • Cincinnati, Ohio
  • Cambridge, Massachusetts
  • Seattle, Washington

And in Canada:

  • Toronto, Ontario
  • Vancouver, British Columbia
  • Edmonton, Alberta
  • Gatineau, Québec
  • Victoria, British Columbia

Still, guests don’t have to stay in places where there are a lot of long-term ready listings. In May, Airbnb added a new feature called “Split Stays.” This gives people more options for longer stays by letting them stay in two different homes. When you search for a specific destination, Split Stays automatically show up in the search results. This means that guests looking for longer stays will usually see about 40 percent more listings.

Most Hospitable

Airbnb looked at the cities in the US and Canada with the most five-star reviews from long-term stays to find some of the “friendliest” cities for digital nomads.
In America:

  • Bend, Oregon (93.7%)
  • Santa Fe, New Mexico (91.7%)
  • Boulder, Colorado (91%)
  • Key West, Florida (90.2%)
  • Fresno, California (90%)

And in Canada:

  • Halifax, Nova Scotia (92.6%)
  • Winnipeg, Manitoba (87.7%)
  • Nanaimo, British Columbia (87.1%)
  • Surrey, British Columbia (86.1%)
  • Kelowna, British Columbia (86.1%)

The least expensive

Airbnb looked at the average price per night for long-term stays in places where 1,000 or more long-term stay nights were booked in Q1 2022. This helped them figure out some of the most affordable places in the US and Canada for nomadic living.
In America:

  • Tulalip, Washington ($16.9 USD per night)
  • Catlett, Virginia ($21.8 USD per night)
  • Garretson, South Dakota ($24.3 USD per night)
  • Lamberton, Minnesota ($24.4 USD per night)
  • Angleton, Texas ($24.5 USD per night)

And in Canada:

  • Trois-Rivières, Québec ($35.6 USD per night)
  • Medicine Hat, Alberta ($41.3 USD per night)
  • Gatineau, Québec ($44.5 USD per night)
  • Thorold, Ontario ($46.9 USD per night)
  • Québec City, Québec ($48 USD per night)

Most Popular

Last but not least, Airbnb has prepared a list of the locations that have some of the most long-term stay visits scheduled for the first quarter of 2022.
In America:

  • Los Angeles, California
  • New York, New York
  • San Francisco, California
  • Houston, Texas
  • Seattle, Washington

And in Canada:

  • Toronto, Ontario
  • Montréal, Québec
  • Vancouver, British Columbia
  • Calgary, Alberta
  • Victoria, British Columbia

People are going back to cities again, and some of them even choose to stay and “live” there. In the first quarter of 2022, compared to the first quarter of 2021, the number of nights booked in high-density urban areas grew by 80%.

Airbnb is working with 20 places around the world to make it easier to live and work anywhere. Some of these places are in the US, like Palm Springs, California, Tampa Bay, Florida, and Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Over the next few months, Airbnb will work closely with each of these places to build hubs that are unique to them. These hubs will feature the best long-term stays in the area as well as important information about entry requirements and tax policies.

Airbnb will also work with the destinations on educational campaigns to promote responsible hosting and travelling as a remote worker.

Airbnb’s co-founder and CEO, Brian Chesky, told employees they could work from anywhere when he announced the company’s new remote-working policy.

In the first week after the announcement, more than a million people went to Airbnb’s career page. This shows how much people want to live and work anywhere.
