After being cancelled for two years because of the coronavirus, Oktoberfest is coming back to Germany on Saturday with high hopes and higher prices.
The Associated Press says that between September 17 and October 3, about 487 beer breweries, restaurants, fish and meat grills, wine vendors, and other businesses will help bring much-needed tourism to Munich.
To take advantage of the returning tourists, Oktoberfest officials announced that the event would be open longer each day, with the first beer tents opening at 9 a.m. and closing at 10:30 p.m. At 9:30 p.m., the last order will be taken. Before the pandemic, about six million people visited Munich’s tourist hub each year.
Mayor Dieter Reiter said, “It’s beautiful.” ” It’s clear that the excitement is back. “
Even though people are happy that the event is coming back, prices have gone up because of rising prices and the ongoing war in Ukraine. This year, the average price of a one-liter mug of beer will be between $12.84 and $14.07, which is about 15% more than in 2019.
Due to bans on Russian imports, equipment that runs on natural gas has become more expensive for Germany’s brewers, and the price of barley malt has gone up by more than 100%. Even glass bottles have gone up by 80%, and bottle caps have gone up by 60%.
In August, Clemens Baumgaertner, who is in charge of the Oktoberfest, said that the festival would return to Munich without any restrictions because of COVID. The Wiesn will happen, Baumgaertner said. “It will happen in 2019 the way we know it, and in no other way.”
The German National Tourist Office announced a programme earlier this year to get more people from the United States to visit Germany by showing off its sustainability, social responsibility, and cultural sites in exciting new ways.
