On “Remembrance Sunday,” people in West Oxfordshire thought about the soldiers and women who died in battles around the world.
Hundreds of people gathered in Witney for the Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial on Church Green, followed by a church service at St Mary’s.
Witney Town Council described the turnout as “outstanding.”
“Our youth organisations and members of the Royal British Legion never fail to impress with their passion and dedication to the event.”
“We’d like to thank everyone who came out and did such an excellent job representing the town.”
The Last Post was played during the Act of Remembrance, followed by a two-minute silence and the Reveille.
Individuals, clubs, and organisations represented in their formations included the air cadets, Scouts, Guides, Brownies, Cubs, Beavers, Girls and Boys Brigades, police cadets, fire cadets, St. John’s Ambulance, both secondary schools, churches, the Town Band, and many others.
Students from Henry Box School and Wood Green School presented the names of at least 28 organisations that laid wreaths at the War Memorial.
They included Witney MP Robert Courts, Mayor of Witney Cllr. Liz Duncan, Chairman of West Oxfordshire District Council Cllr. Julian Cooper, and members from Oxfordshire County Council.
Around 2,000 people gathered in Carterton to pay their respects to the departed.
Following a church ceremony, the RAF Cadet Band and a squadron of 30 RAF Brize Norton personnel led the parade back to the War Memorial.
Councillor Nick Leverton, Mayor of Carterton, and Ron Spurs, Deputy Lieutenant, laid the first wreaths, followed by Group Captain Claire O’Grady and Station Commander RAF Brize Norton.
Councillor Michele Mead laid the wreath on behalf of Robert Courts MP, and a huge number of local groups and organisations also paid their respects.
A bugler from the RAF Voluntary Band played the Last Post and Reveille, and the Brize Norton Military Wives Choir provided moving background music.
