Rimowa’s $1,720 Champagne Suitcase

Rimowa is known for its high quality (and pricey) hard shell luggage, and has a pretty loyal following. Over the years Rimowa has come out with some unique luggage pieces, though I’ve never seen anything quite like this before.

Rimowa is selling luggage for your wine bottle. Specifically, for $1,720 you can be the owner of the Rimowa One Bottle Case, described as “the ultimate piece for connoisseurs.” The case, which weighs around 4.5 pounds, features TSA approved locks, a grab handle, and protective cushions.

Now, in fairness, I don’t think this is actually new, but a friend just brought this to my attention and it’s the first time that I’ve seen this, and I couldn’t help but share.

How would one even use this?

Presumably you’d buy something like this as a statement piece, rather than it actually being terribly practical. But even if this is more about style than anything else, I’m still not sure how exactly you’d want to use this:

  • You’re probably not going to check a single bottle of wine on a plane, and for that matter you’d probably be better off packing a bottle of wine in a suitcase surrounded by soft materials
  • In theory I suppose it’s a cute way to gift a bottle of wine to someone, though a $1,720 case certainly adds to the cost of gifting a bottle of wine
  • I’m trying to think of other uses… do people frequently transport a closed, single bottle of wine?

Bottom line

There’s a lot of expensive luggage out there, but Rimowa’s $1,720 case for a bottle of wine has to be one of the most interesting items out there. I’d kind of love to see how someone actually uses this in real life.
