The new rules will make it illegal to smoke marijuana on the streets of the popular area.

In order to clean up the “grim” atmosphere, Amsterdam is making it illegal to smoke marijuana in the open in its famous red light district.

According to Reuters, the new rules will make it illegal to smoke marijuana on the streets in that area, which is in Amsterdam’s Canal District and close to the central train station. The city council announced the new rules. They are part of the city’s first female mayor’s plan to make the neighbourhood a better place to live, the wire service said.

CNN said that the new rules will take effect in the middle of May.

The Municipality of Amsterdam said in a statement that tourists and people using drugs and alcohol on the street cause a lot of trouble for people who live in the old city center. “Tourists also bring in street vendors, which makes the area more dangerous and less safe.” The mood can get pretty bad, especially at night. People who are drunk or high also tend to stay longer. “Residents can’t get a good night’s sleep, and the area is becoming dangerous and unlivable.”

In Amsterdam, sex shops and brothels are allowed in the red-light district. Marijuana is also legal in the city, and “coffee shops” sell it.

The city also wants to discourage the sale of alcohol, which is already illegal from Thursday to Sunday after 4 p.m., according to CNN. Going forward, stores will also have to hide or get rid of alcohol during those times.

And if more is needed, the network said that Amsterdam will think about making it illegal to smoke marijuana in the outdoor areas of coffee shops and to buy soft drugs to take home at certain times.

The red light district has been in the news before, so this isn’t the first time. In 2021, the city’s mayor wanted to close down brothels in the city centre and move the people who worked there to an “erotic centre” outside of the city center. The city has also banned tours of the city’s downtown red light district that go by the windows of people who work there.
