A new report from Euromonitor, a market research company based in the UK, says that Europe will be the winner in the tourism game in 2022.

Its annual report compares the attractiveness of 100 cities around the world across six categories, or “pillars,” such as tourism policy and performance, sustainability, infrastructure, health and safety, and economic performance.

In the time before Covid, when the index ranked top destinations by the number of international arrivals, Asian cities like Hong Kong and Bangkok dominated the top of the list.

But in the Top 100 City Destinations Index 2022, Paris has stayed at the top for the second year in a row. Eight of the other top 10 cities are also in Europe.

Dubai was again number two on the list, but when it came to international arrivals, it was number one. This year, more than 12 million people went to Dubai, which is almost twice as many as last year. The delay of Expo 2020 Dubai, which ran from October 2021 to March 2022, would have helped this a lot.

This year, the number of trips that came into the world went up by more than 80%.

“While 2022 was a good year for the travel industry, it will take a long time to fully recover from the pandemic, and government support is still very important in all regions,” said Euromonitor. It said that the speed of tourism’s comeback is likely to be affected by steeply rising inflation, worsening economic conditions, and the war in Ukraine.

In the ranking, there were 40 cities from Europe. Italy, Spain, and Greece were the big players from Western Europe, with six, five, and four cities, respectively.

Amsterdam was third, Madrid was fourth, Rome was fifth, and London moved up two spots to No. 6 this year. Munich and Berlin both moved up two spots to No. 7 and No. 8, respectively, and Barcelona moved up one spot to No. 9.

New York just barely made it into the top 10, but the report did say that tourism in US cities as a whole had a “strong rebound.”

Due to the travel restrictions caused by Covid, Asia as a whole didn’t do as well, but some Asian cities did better than others. Singapore moved up 30 spots on the list, and Euromonitor said that it was “the most business-friendly destination” because it had simple tax rules and a lot of skilled workers.

In terms of health and safety, Africa and the Middle East did the best.

Intra-regional travel, the loosening of restrictions related to Covid, and the return of international travel were all important factors in the popularity of cities in 2022.

But Euromonitor said, “Asia is the region to watch in 2023 because the return of international travel, both inbound and outbound, is sure to shake up the rankings.”
